Simposio: Colectividades y formas contemporáneas de intervención social
25 de octubre de 2013
Coordinado por: José Luis Pérez Pont
Con la participación de: Javier Martín Jiménez (Hablar en arte), Lurdes Fernández (Off Limits), Núria Güell y Chus Tudelilla.
Horario: 11-14 h. y 16-19.30 h.

Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló (EACC)
C/ Prim, s/n.

colectividades, creando redes multidisciplinarias.

Arte Garage Pemasa (1999-2001) y espacio Off Limits (2006-actualidad).

Colectivo Brecht / 18.30 h

Chus Tudelilla

Symposium: Contemporary Collectives and Forms of Social Intervention

25 October 2013
Times: 11:00 am – 2:00 pm & 4:00 – 7:30 pm

Coordinated by:
José Luis Pérez Pont

With the goal of engaging with other forms of project management and intervention in various social fields, we wish to afford a vision of different models which, from or with collectives, will rehearse multifaceted approaches that break away from the idea of the individual curatorship, laying bare the exhaustion of the “star” curator, while at once examining the potential of these more horizontal approaches applied to contemporary fields of interest.

The Public is Ours / 11:00 am
The street belongs to everyone. It is the place that best expresses a society’s diversity and plurality. That said, there are many signs in the public space striving to define forms of life that reaffirm the individual over any notion of the collective. The situation calls for a critical rereading of our social and political environs.

José Luis Pérez Pont
Art critic and curator
Co-editor of MAKMA visual arts and contemporary culture magazine. Works with publishing projects and curatorships from the perspective of social research and analysis with public and private institutions. Among his projects are “Del mono azul al cuello blanco. In the field of public art, he works with various projects for intervention in the urban public space. Since 1998 he has curated the annual Art públic / Universitat pública, Muestra de arte público para jóvenes creadores, at the University of Valencia. Between 2001 and 2004 he directed Proyecto Calle, a public art initiative in Peralta (Regional Government of Navarra / Town Council of Peralta). Since 2006 he has directed Intracity, a public art and social mediation project (Xarxa Joves.net).

Curatorship from the Collective / 12:30 pm
At the current moment, the «individual star curator», while still very much alive and expected to live for quite some time yet, is beginning to be questioned and there are certain signs of exhaustion in comparison with other models that look for more plural and more horizontal approaches. One of the working lines of the association hablarenarte: advocates a break with conventional systems, addressing curatorship from a collective stance, conceptualised by the whole team of hablarenarte: or implementing projects that are able to introduce other ways of working. This is the case, for instance, of “Curators’ Network”, a European project already with three years experience in creating a collaborative network among curators, focusing on artists from different countries and facilitating connections between international agents in the art world in order to form a community. Another example is the project “Jugada a 3 bandas”, which encourages curated exhibitions in private art galleries, thus forcing the curator to adapt to a context other than the one in which he usually operates.

Javier Martín Jiménez
Founding member of the association hablarenarte: (www.hablarenarte.com) and in charge of managing projects like Curators’ Network (www.curators-network.eu), Jugada a 3 bandas (www.a3bandas.org), Ingráfica, Plataforma Internacional de Arte Gráfico (www.ingrafica.org) and Lugares de Tránsito (www.lugaresdetransito.net), among others.
After graduating with a degree in History of Art from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, he went on to become general coordinator of PHotoEspaña (PHE07), where he had previously held the post of director of activities (PHE05; PHE06). Prior to that he had worked at the magazine Doce Notas as editorial coordinator as well as contributing to the magazines Lápiz and Sublime. He is a founding member and secretary of the federation of cultural associations of Madrid AAIM (Agentes Artísticos Independientes de Madrid, http://aaimadrid.blogspot.com/).

Co-creating Culture / 4:00 pm
“Hola estás haciendo 1 peli” is an experience of participative audiovisual creation, a growing category of projects based on the principles of collaboration, co-creation and participation that is transforming the role of the spectator and destabilising, from the practice, the commonly accepted roles and power relations in the development and reception of an art or cultural project. Are they tools for empowerment and social transformation? Or the logical consequences of the information era? Or new and more sophisticated models of imposition of imaginary? During the encounter we will analyse “Hola estás haciendo 1 peli” and other participative projects developed with the mediation of Off Limits, and look at the issues that arise around the role of culture and its agents in the network society.

Lurdes Fernández
Graduate in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute, is Director of Off Limits, an independent space located in Madrid dedicated to artistic experimentation in the field of visual and performing arts and a company dedicated to cultural mediation.
Fernández has been Technical Director of AVAM (Associated Visual Artists of Madrid) and Manager of UAAV (Union of Associations of Visual Artists of Spain). She has also worked with art galleries like Marlborough, Max Estrella and Bárcena & Cia. In the field of artistic production and exhibition, she directed MAD.03, and has developed two independent projects: Espacio de Arte Garage Pemasa (1999-2001) and Espacio Off Limits (2006-ongoing).

«The Ethics of Consequences as a Place of Resistance» / 5:15 pm
Based on a strict positioning conceived to generate mechanisms for dissidence, the work of Núria Güell addresses and reformulates the limits of legality, focusing on the abuses of power committed by the institutions that govern us through established legality. Her projects are conceived as disruptive tactics in specific contexts to alter established power relations, in which she is always involved, collaborates or allied with agents or collectives, creating multidisciplinary networks.

Núria Güell
A graduate in Art from the University of Barcelona, Güell furthered her studies at Cátedra Arte de Conducta, the performance and time-based arts studies program in Havana under Tania Bruguera. Her work has been exhibited at the biennials in Havana, Pontevedra, Ljubljana and Liverpool, as well as in the Triennial in Tallin, and in museums in Barcelona, The Hague, Madrid, Hertogenbosch, Paris, New York, Chicago, Miami, Formigine, London, Stockholm, Istanbul, Leipzig, Bucharest, Zagreb, Cali and Lima as well as various self-run social centres.

The Brecht Collective / 6:30 pm
«In the late twenties, when the concept of literary and theatrical ‘collectives’ became fashionable, especially in Berlin, I once said to him: ‘For you the collective is a group of intelligent people who contribute to what one person wants—that is, what you want.’ He admitted, with his peculiar sly smile, that I might not be so far wrong as that.» The testimony of the writer Carl Zuckmayer reveals the critical importance that the collective had in the work of Bertolt Brecht, who claimed that «the act of creation has become a collective creative process, a continuum of a dialectical sort in which the original invention, taken on its own, has lost much of its importance.» Nonetheless, Brecht’s authorship imposed itself over his collaborators, whose names are barely known if not completely forgotten. “The Brecht Collective» conference defends the people who worked on his projects, and questions the possibilities of the collective concept.

Chus Tudelilla
A doctor with a PhD in History of Art from the University of Zaragoza, Tudelilla is a freelance exhibition curator and art critic.
